This is the 3rd consecutive year I've ridden the Superbowl ride and as always there has been snow and the company of fine mountain bikers. This year was no exception and Todd, Tom, and me had great day of riding complete with two stops at Bodos.
This year the temps were much warmer than the last 2 years. When we got to the top of the pavement, the long slushy slog on snow choked fire road began.
Conditions were so snowy and slushy that riding through it was equal parts comedy and tragedy. The fire road section leading to Flag Pole knob took about twice as long as usual. My knees were achy from turning a hard gear in all the slop to try and avoid spinning out.
Finally we reached the top and took a break in the relative warmth of the grassy overlook. We all took some time to re-energize and refuel. Then we decided to head out and ride the fun and steep trail that plunges down to Hone Quarry damn.
The remaining fire road was much more melted than the first section and we got a frigid soaking from bombing down a rutted out fire road that consumed by streaming snow melt.
We finally got to the single track and as I had hoped it was in great condition. The rolling ridge line top section had about an inch of snow that livened up a few large rock features. The rest of the trail was mostly snow free and the dirt was in great shape. This was a very nice contrast to the fire road slop we had to navigate to get here.
We finished the ride strong and made a dash to C-ville for a great recovery feast at Bodos.
